Threatened fish species in the Northeast Atlantic are functionally rare

چکیده

Aim The criteria used to define the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List categories are essentially based on demographic parameters at species level, but they do not integrate species' traits or their roles in ecosystems. Consequently, current IUCN-based protection measures may be sufficient conserve ecosystem functioning and services. Some have a singular combination associated with unique functions. Such functionally distinct increasingly recognized as key facet biodiversity since are, by definition, irreplaceable. aim this study is investigate whether threatened also rare identify which determine extinction risk. Location European continental shelf seas. Time period 1984–2020. Major taxa studied Marine fish. Methods Using newly compiled trait information 425 marine fish waters, more than 30 years scientific bottom trawl surveys, we estimated functional distinctiveness, restrictedness scarcity each cross-referenced it IUCN conservation status. Results In seas, 38% (9 out 24 species) were identified most distinct. By mapping risk multidimensional space, showed that greatest long-lived high trophic level. We sparsely distributed (4% total area average) scarce abundances (<1% relative mean abundance common species). Main Conclusions Because substantial proportion thus play functioning, stress traits—especially rarity—should become an indispensable step development management plans.

Pattern of recruitment variability in the geographical range of the exploited northeast Atlantic fish species

It has long been argued that populations living on the edges of the species geographical range should exhibit stronger environmentally imposed variations in abundances than populations living near the centre of this range. This so-called ‘Species Range Hypothesis’ is tested here for the recruitment of 62 marine fish populations of the northeast Atlantic, belonging to 17 species. The pattern of ...

Reversal of Fish Stock Decline in the Northeast Atlantic

Analyses of global fish stocks paint a mixed picture of success, with some holding fishery management responsible for the poor status of many stocks [1-3] or predicting widespread collapse [1, 4]. Some suggest a stable [5] or improving situation [6] in certain jurisdictions. The debate is particularly polarized in the European Union, where the Common Fisheries Policy (CFP) has been criticized f...

The threatened status of restricted-range coral reef fish species

Coral reefs are the most diverse ecosystem in the sea. Throughout the world they are being overfished, polluted and destroyed, placing biodiversity at risk. To date, much of the concern over biodiversity loss has centred on local losses and the possibility of global extinction has largely been discounted. However, recent research has shown that 24% of reef fish species have restricted ranges (<...

Biodiversity : are microbial species threatened ? Commentary

Introduction A well known microbiologist and I were talking recently about microbial diversity. He asked me, “Microbiologists are not concerned about endangered species, are we?” His attitude reflects the view of many microbiologists. Whereas botanists and zoologists, as well as the public at large, know that many plant and animal species are threatened with extinction, the question as it perta...

Bioenergetics modeling of the annual consumption of zooplankton by pelagic fish feeding in the Northeast Atlantic

The present study uses bioenergetics modeling to estimate the annual consumption of the main zooplankton groups by some of the most commercially important planktivorous fish stocks in the Northeast Atlantic, namely Norwegian spring-spawning (NSS) herring (Clupea harengus), blue whiting (Micromesistius poutassou) and NEA mackerel (Scomber scombrus). The data was obtained from scientific surveys ...
